Bleacher Report: 18th (Last Week: 15th)

"The Tennessee Titans have been the kings of ugly football in 2018. Whether it’s been a loss to the Miami Dolphins or a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Titans are most assuredly not accruing many style points this season. On Sunday in Buffalo, they took ugly to an entirely new level. Against the Bills, the Titans managed just 221 yards of total offense. Tennessee turned the ball over three times. Marcus Mariota threw for all of 129 yards and a pick."

This is pretty accurate outside of a win vs the Eagles. The Titans are playing some ugly football right now, but a the first three games of the season were almost ugly by design. After Mariota went out people seem to forget that the Titans won two games where Gabbert started.

After finally opening up the offense the Titans crawled back into their shell and seemed to want to play a conservative type of game that wouldn’t give an inferior team a chance to win.

On paper that makes sense, but when you turn the ball over three times on your side of the field you have to adjust at some point. Matt LaFleur has been very patient with his gameplans and more often than not it has worked out. However, the loss on Sunday is squarely on his shoulders for failing to adapt when his gameplan was clearly poor.

In the future he will need to show that he can make changes at halftime to give his team a chance to exploit weaknesses. Otherwise, for all the potential he has shown in his first four games he may end up with a major flaw in his play calling ability.
