Are there names that should still interest in Tennessee Titans in free agency?

It is almost time to start really looking ahead to the 2017 NFL Draft, which could be huge for the future of this franchise.

Before that though, the Tennessee Titans should make one more decent sized move in free agency. That is, if this offseason is similar to the only other example we have under Jon Robinson.

More from Titans Free Agency

For example, in 2016 the Tennessee Titans signed Ben Jones and Rishard Matthews on March 9th and March 10th respectively. That was during the first wave of free agency.

These were players that the Tennessee Titans believed could be long-term starters for the team. They fit the criteria of tough, team first players with great work ethic and who fit under the 30 or younger criteria.

In the second wave of free agency (a week later) the Tennessee Titans signed Sean Spence who played over 500 snaps for the team last year. He was a young player that they believed had starter upside, but was going to be a rotational starter.

That is the phase we are in now, so if the Titans find a player that fits that mold (sub-30 but not quite ready to start) this is the time when they will make that move.

The final wave brought the Titans Rashad Johnson, who played more snaps than Da’Norris Searcy. So, for all intents and purposes he was a starter on this team. The big difference with him is that while he had starter talent, his age kept him from being thought of as a long term starter.

  • So who fits in the 2nd wave?

Since the 2nd wave has started, first we need to know what to look for as Tennessee Titans fans. Based off of last year, this week should be spent looking at guys who are sub-30 and will be used as rotational player.

Here are the top three players at every position that fit that criteria based on Rotoworld’s free agent list:

QB: Colin Kaepernick, Robert Griffin III, Case Keenum

RB: Christine Michael, Denard Robinson, Brandon Bolden

WR: Michael Floyd, Brian Quick, Kamar Aiken

TE: Larry Donnell, Mychal Rivera, Gavin Escobar

OT: Austin Paztor, Matt McCants, Mike Adams

IOL: Tim Letio, Brandon Fusco, Mike Harris

EDGE: Armonty Bryant, Justin Trattou, David Bass

DL: Johnathan Hankins, Jared Odrick, Tyrunn Walker

LB: Zach Brown, Perry Riley, Kevin Minter

CB: Sam Shields, Alterraun Verner, Nickell Robey-Coleman

S: Bradley McDougald, T.J. McDonald, Daimion Stafford

There isn’t a lot there, but if I had to pick four guys to make a short list it would be the highlighted names.

Johnathan Hankins isn’t going to end up on the Tennessee Titans after their investment with Sly Williams. That means that the top 3 in no order are Perry Riley, Kevin Minter, and Michael Floyd.

While none of them had outstanding seasons last year I could see all of them earning snaps for the Tennessee Titans in 2017.
