We are know one month away from the 2015 NFL Draft, and it’s pretty clear that the Tennessee Titans have three options during this upcoming draft.
The first option and the most popular among Tennessee fans is to draft USC’s defensive lineman Leonard Williams. This route is by far the safest option for Tennessee. Williams fits into the Titans defensive system and is rated by many as the top prospect in this year’s NFL Draft.
The next two options for the Tennessee Titans are to either draft Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota or trade out of the No. 2 pick and collect additional picks in the draft.
As we get closer to the draft it is becoming more clear that Marcus Mariota will be selected with the number two pick, regardless of what team is selecting with that pick. The question now comes it Mariota the right fit in Tennessee and should they take a chance on the Oregon product.
I do not believe that Mariota will be a great fit in the Music City, not just because of Mariota’s talent but the overall situation. If Tennessee drafts Mariota he will most likely be expected to come in and start right away. With head coach Ken Whisenhunt on a short leash from management the Titans are looking to improve quickly, and I don’t see them waiting for Mariota to develop unless they truly believe that he can compete immediately.
Bleacher Report writer Mike Freeman believes that the Titans are interested in moving the No. 2 pick, writing
“It’s a virtual certainty that Winston and Mariota will be the top two picks in the draft. Four different general managers told me they believe the Titans will trade the second overall pick. One GM said the Titans have made it clear the No. 2 spot is for sale. One team executive I spoke to estimated there’s a 50-to-60 percent chance the Titans move the pick to a team that wants Mariota; another said it’s almost a certainty.”
The smart move may just be for the Titans to consider trading down in the draft in return of additional draft picks.
The Titans have had an impressive off-season adding plenty of talent to fill some of the many of the teams holes. No matter what Tennessee decides to do with their pick and the rest of the draft. This may be one of the most important drafts in franchise history.
