Tennessee Titans: Breaking the Silence on Titans’ Season
By Sean Maczko
I haven’t posted in a while but I feel like it’s time. I cringe when I hear people talking about drafting a QB this year (specifically Jameis Winston).
Here is my mindset – and I don’t feel like I should have to say this but I will. I have traveled 8 hours each way many times to see the Tennessee Titans play – I bleed blue. I take losses like I am a “part” of the team. But reality is…our team is awful. We have a couple of bright spots, but it pales in comparison to what we have as a “unit”. Jurrell Casey, Delanie Walker, Kendall Wright (occasionally), Avery Williamson, Taylor Lewan, and the small sample size of Zach Mettenberger are about the only positives of this team.
I am 100% convinced that even if the Titans had QB Steve Young and RB Barry Sanders in their prime our team would barely be .500. It’s not about drafting one specific player and putting all our hopes and dreams into him. It’s about building a team through the draft (ie. Seattle Seahawks).
Titans’ owner Tommie Smith has said the right things when it comes to making this team better and putting this team over through a makeover – lets see what he delivers.
I am not a fan whatsoever of changing coaches after 1 or 2 seasons but HC Ken Whisenhunt better hope he drastically changes this team come next year. He is passionate and animated and I love that, but his record of 3-24 is unacceptable over his last 27 games. Everyone called for Mike Munchak‘s head because he showed about as much passion as a “deer in headlights” but we took 5 steps backward with our new energized coach.
The best thing for the Titans would be to take that #1 or #2 draft pick and trade back to give us a few more options to help build this team. The St. Louis Rams seemed to make out pretty good while trading back from their #2 pick to the Washington Redskins so they could draft QB Robert Griffin III. It’s going to be a process. We have drafted some solid players the last couple seasons and it looks like we are going to have to continue that this year through a number of picks.
I am also very frustrated with DC Ray Horton because he is adamant about making a defense fit his scheme, when he should be trying to come up with a scheme that fits our players. We need a lot of help. Flat out. It’s sad that pretty much unanimously NFL experts are calling us the worst team in the NFL.
I think the biggest downfall is that Whisenhunt sold us very high on the team coming into this year, but for him to miss as badly as he did kind of puts his credibility in question.
Lastly, I will say this. So far I have not liked what I’ve seen by RB Bishop Sankey and it hurts me to say that. He grew up about 20 minutes from where I’m from and I have occassionally talked to his mom and step-mom throughout the season. However, they have got to give him 20-25 carries in this finale to see where he is really at. They know what they have in Shonn Greene, which is nothing special, and they know what they have in Leon Washington, a veteran journeyman with solid kick/punt return skills, and that clearly isn’t the future. Sankey looked great in college. He also had a huge workload. Did that take a toll on him? Or is it our atrocious O-line? So many questions we need answered.
I hope I don’t find myself writing a similar article in 2015.
