Football season has arrived. For the Tennessee Titans, players and coaches are well aware that jobs are on the line. At age 90, owner Bud Adams is desperate to witness his team end a playoff drought that includes no postseason victories since January 2004. Their last postseason appearance came in 2009.
Throughout training camp and the entire regular season, Titan Sized will conduct weekly fan approval rating polls for head coach Mike Munchak, offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, defensive coordinator Jerry Gray and quarterback Jake Locker. Munchak and Gray have been responsible for two playoff-less seasons. Locker played most of last season with a bum shoulder. Late last season, Loggains took over for Chris Palmer.
Titan Sized has already looked at Munchak and Gray. Due to a limited sample, Loggains has been excluded from consideration. That leaves room for one player evaluation: Jake Locker.
Are fans entering training camp with high expectations at starting quarterback? Last April, Titan Sized conducted a poll that asked readers whether they wanted Tim Tebow on the roster. Of 190 respondents, 73 of them (38 percent) not only wanted Tebow but claimed him as the best quarterback on the roster.
Those fans aren’t willing to use inexperience or a shoulder injury as an excuse for Locker’s lackluster 2012-13 NFL season. Despite entering his third season with just one healthy start, many critics believe this is a make-or-break year for Locker. And if Locker breaks, the coaching staff may go down with him.
Earliest reports from training camp indicate that Locker has played well. Then again, Locker has mostly faced a defense that’s one season removed from allowing a franchise-worst 471 points. Can Locker showcase the same skills on game day? Can he stay healthy? Can Loggains better utilize his talents and put him in a position to succeed?
Where do Titan Sized readers stand on Locker? Do you completely approve (100%) or disapprove (0%) of his first two seasons? Is it somewhere in-between? Give your answer in the poll below. All totals will get tallied. Final results toward end of week.
