It was just announced that Jared Cook will either be given the franchise tag or will be given a new contract by the 2013 season opener.
Jared Cook, who will be entering his fifth season with the Titans is a guy that has a load of talent. I know, it seems like that’s all we hear is how much talent he has. I guess talent without production is just that, talent.
With Jake Locker entering his third year and his second year as the starter its extremely important that the Titans do what they can to make sure the young QB out of Washington has as many weapons as possible. Cook is a guy that at 6’5 can run a 4.49 and really showed how could he could be two years ago when he caught 49 balls for 759 yards and 3 TDs. Last year, “Cookie” as he is called by many fans still had a pretty good year with 44 receptions and 523 yards.
There were a few reason for the dip in production last year as the Titans’ Jake Locker started for the first time and had to break in a new offensive coordinator. As you all know Locker got hurt and missed significant time and OC Chris Palmer was fired in the middle of the year. So needless to say, last year was a train wreck of sorts.
At the end of the year, Cookie didn’t even seem to want to come back to play for the Titans so it will be interesting to see how he reacts if he gets the franchise tag. Most of the time, players simply hate getting the franchise tag because they would rather be locked up to a long contract.
Cookie also seemed to be disappointed in his role with the team and in the direction the team was heading. Maybe he will be excited once he gets a chance to really sit down with Loggains and figure out his place in the offense.
Luckily, the Titans don’t have to worry about losing a very talented piece of their offense, at least for one year.
What say you?
