The Tennessee Titans have fired OC Chris Palmer tonight in an unexpected move. The Titans have been up and down on offense all year, despite having one of the most talent stacked rosters they’ve had in quite some time.
Owner Bud Adams did put the team on notice that no ones job was safe after their loss to the Chicago Bears. Looks like he wasn’t joking. It certainly wasn’t a move we were expecting to see at this time. It basically seems like too little too late, as the Titans just waved goodbye to their playoff hopes with the loss in Jacksonville this past Sunday.
Here’s Munchak’s statement about the release, courtesy of ESPN.com’s Paul Kuharsky:
"“I have a great deal of respect for Chris Palmer as a coach and that was the reason we brought him here. I appreciate the time and effort he put in here and I want to wish him and his family the best moving forward.“As an offense I didn’t feel like we were progressing the way that I had hoped. I believe we needed a change in direction and I hope to see that progress in our remaining games. Dowell has worked here for a number of years under some very successful coordinators and he is ready for this challenge.”"
QB’s coach Dowell Loggains has been promoted to OC, I’m guessing for the rest of the season, where they will then see what coaches are available on the market *cough Norv Turner *cough. It’ll be interesting to see if he finds more success than Palmer did. Palmer never seemed to be able to fully tap into the potential that is bursting on this offense.
It’ll also be interesting to see if it has any effect on the blocking, which has variated between amazing and horrible.
As always, we’re all sitting here waiting, not a clue as to what we’ll be seeing from the Titans this next weekend.
The circus continues.
