Tennessee Titans: Will Witherspoon or Zach Brown?

That will be the question the Tennessee Titans are asking themselves at the beginning of this next season: Will Witherspoon or Zach Brown?

The Titans drafted OLB Zach Brown out of North Carolina with the 52nd pick of the 2012 NFL Draft and it would seem he’s the heir apparent to the WOLB spot. It’s just a matter of when he’ll be ready to take the position.

Witherspoon has been a solid presence for the Titans but they’ve been going with a youth movement and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him end up playing second fiddle to Brown this year. The Titans already have to young linebackers starting next to him in Colin McCarthy and Akeem Ayers. It appears they may have found the final piece to their young linebacker puzzle.

Some of the knocks on Brown were bad tackling but after watching some tape on him, I’m not really sure why he got that rap. He does miss some tackles but with a little bit of coaching I think this guy could be a big playmaker. If that is indeed what he turns out to be and Ayers shows some more improvement in his sophomore year, the Titans could have one of the best young linebacker cores in the league. Seriously.

Brown has seven career interceptions and 230 tackles in his four years at North Carolina. The biggest concern with him is his character. Hopefully the Titans no nonsense approach to coaching will help Brown mature and make sure he stays out of trouble.

There’s a lot of time between now and the start of the regular season, lots of things will happen. Will Brown beat out Witherspoon? Honestly, I can’t tell you. What I can tell you is there’s plenty to be excited for with the Titans linebackers and I’m chomping at the bit for preseason to get here already. The Titans added some good young talent and I’m ready to see them out there.
