The Titans Defense and If’s

Entering the 2011 season, the Titans defense has a lot of if….

IF

If blank happens then greatness is achieved. Every team faces the “if” question every off-season. With the goal of each team remaining to win the Super Bowl (we hope) then certain objectives must be reached to fulfill this goal.

With the Titans, there are many questions on the back of the team heading into this odd season. The NFL Lockout has done many wrongs to the teams in terms of preparation. IF the lockout is solved, then we still have training camp, and that means we have competitive football in a world where most of these “if” questions listed below might be answered.

IF…Corltand Finnegan keeps up being such a fantastic vocal leader….then the team may take on his feisty, aggressive identity.

IF…the coaching staff can introduce the new defensive playbook to their defense well enough in such a short amount of time, then there is more hope for the playoffs.

IF…Michael Griffin can step up his play from the safety position, then there is less worry on the back-end of a defense that, at times, could be shredded in the backfield.

IF…all the depth at the cornerback position becomes more than just depth, they become a strength, then the team is that much closer to solving the pass defense.

IF… Gerald McCoy can come in and play as the fast, coverage-setting linebacker that he is capable of, then that’s one more hole plugged in that pass-defense.

IF… rookie Akeem Ayers can bring down the quarterback (as advertised)…..

IF… Senderrick Marks can rush the passer from the defensive tackle position like he did in college….

IF… a free agent can be brought in to be a solid starter, or even a star….

IF… (The Biggest If) defensive end Jason Babin can be resigned……then there’s hope.

IF… Babin then plays like he did in the 2010 season and proves that he is not a one-year wonder….
