It would seem to be essential for the Titans to either draft a young, stud safety (Matt Elam, DJ Swearinger) or sign a proven, dependable guy, which would probably be harder to find. But if they don’t, then perhaps they believe that Markelle Martin can be the answer. He might just be. He was pretty damn good at Oklahoma State before having knee problems that caused him to drop to the sixth round of the 2012 draft and subsequently miss his first season as a rookie. Still, he might be an option. I hope he is, but we’ll find out soon enough.

He needs to be more effective in his sophomore year. Perhaps some of his struggles were due to an injured foot that cost him his 2011 college season. I don’t know, but Solomon didn’t make enough of an impression this year to warrant more than a C+.

2012 Rookie Season Group Grade: B -

While the Titans rookies didn’t have the same type of season the class before them had, it’s still hard to be disappointed with the 2012 draft. It’s always a guessing game, and the Titans guessed quite well once again. They gained solid starting players in Wright, Brown, Martin, and the verdict is still out on some of the other picks.

Here’s looking forward to the 2013 NFL draft where the Titans will be gunning for picks that help them make the playoffs in 2013.

It’s funny to think how quickly Kendall Wright, and his draft selection, went from reviled to applauded from the Tennessee Titans faithful. I think it’s safe to say neither fans nor pundits alike had this guy anywhere on our radar, but after we looked at his tape and got to know him, we were happy to have him. All of this was before any actual football was played, of course.

Now, the immediate surprise that followed his pick was really predicated on the fact that, after the start to his 2011 season, a healthy Kenny Britt was going to come back and have a beast of a year. He didn’t have quite the impact many expected, though, and was featured about as evenly as Wright. It’s hard to say how much the presence of Wright affected his looks this season.

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

So how did Wright pan out his first year? If you watched the Tennessee Titans throughout the season, you noticed that he was definitely a featured player in the offense, even if he didn’t have a huge year statistically. His numbers on the season when all was said and done worked out to 64 receptions, which he led the team in, for 626 yards and 4 touchdowns. Only Nate Washington had more yardage at 746. Additionally, Tennessee didn’t have the strongest play at quarterback this year, so it would have been difficult for any but the most elite receivers to put up gaudy numbers.

If Wright was limited by anything, it was an often times confusing offensive attack employed throughout the season by Loggains, and Palmer before him. The team tried to force Wright the ball by way of receiver screens that never seemed to garner any yards, and he wasn’t used as the deep vertical threat the way he was at Baylor. Suffice to say, the next offensive coordinator needs to find a way to get Kendall the ball in medium and deep routes, as this seems to be where he is most effective. Using him as a short-route, DeSean Jackson type threat would not seem to play to his strengths, which is surprising given his tangibles.

Kendall Wright will no doubt prove to be a strong addition to the Tennessee Titans franchise. We are currently experiencing some growing pains on both sides of the ball, but in just his first year of professional football, Wright has shown that he is already on par with respected veterans of the league, and he will only continue to get better as he matures as a player, and the offense begins to find it’s identity.

The Tennessee Titans spent their second round draft pick, from this past Aprils draft, on UNC OLB Zach Brown. The pick drew mixed reactions on draft day. The Titans did need a WSLB, and Brown fits the mold, especially with his 4.4 speed and ability to blitz and cover. However many felt the pick could have been spent on an offensive linemen, possibly Wisconsin C Peter Konz.

Coming out of college he was pinned with first round talent, because of his athleticism and especially his speed. But his football instincts and physicality were questioned, by some onlookers, and this caused him to slide into the early second round.

Brown started the season as mainly a special teams contributor, and got very little play on the defensive side of the ball. As the season progressed and starer Will Weatherspoon struggled, Brown began to get more playing time at the WSLB position. He quickly made his presence felt. As the season went on he progressed, and eventually earned the starting spot at WSLB, and he didn’t disappoint.

Brown made plays with his speed consistently. He used his speed on the edge, and flashed some pass rushing skills, finishing the season with 5.5 sacks. He also showed his ability in coverage game as well. He was able to run with tight ends and even some receivers, making multiple plays in pass coverage; including three interceptions, two of which went for touchdowns. He never seemed to show a lack of physicality, and even seemed to look for it.

Brown finished the season with a combined 93 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 3 ints, and 1 forced fumble.

Brown consistently made himself noticeable in games, he did not hide or shy away from contact, and was an immediate play maker for a defense that desperately needed one. Look for Brown to be a play maker for the Titans now and in the future. Brown teamed with other young LB’s Akeem Ayers, and Colin McCarthy has the potential to be a special group.
