Remember when Kyle Vanden Bosch and Jason Babin were Pro Bowl defensive linemen for the Tennessee Titans? In the past few months, both players were free agents. On Feb. 5, Vanden Bosch was released after three seasons with Jim Schwartz and the Detroit Lions.

The Titans have a rotation of defensive ends who lack depth, sack totals and aggressiveness. Because of that, some fans insisted that the organization reunite with these players. What they don’t consider is that Babin hasn’t done much since he left Nashville. Vanden Bosch is on the downside of his career. Jim Washburn is a former defensive coordinator.

Were you one of the fans who got irritated from the reunion suggestions? Get ready for another one. For the second consecutive season, Jason Jones could test free agency.

Jones spent his first four seasons with the Titans. In 2012, the Seattle Seahawks signed him to a one-year, $4.5 million contract. In 12 games, Jones had 10 tackles with four pass deflections, three sacks and one fumble recovery. He finished the season on injured reserve because of a knee injury.

Unless Jones accepts a team-friendly or incentive-based deal, the Seahawks won’t re-sign him. That defense doesn’t need to overpay for a defensive tackle who’s suited for nickel and dime packages.

Free agency is approximately three weeks away. The Titans reportedly offered a contract to Chris Canty. The New York Giants released Canty earlier this month. For his career, Canty has 272 tackles with 19 sacks and two forced fumbles. Compare that to Jones, who has 122 tackles with 18.5 sacks and seven forced fumbles. Pro Football Focus prefers Canty (6.6 rating) over Jones (5.6 rating).

Jones has the versatility to play defensive end or defensive tackle. However, at 6-5 and 276 pounds, his tweener nature prevents him from dominating either position. The Titans already have one undersized interior pass-rusher with Karl Klug. Klug is cheaper and effective. Jurrell Casey and Mike Martin should start.

Once again, don’t expect a reunion. While Jones is better than Marks (who received a -7.7 rating from Pro Football Focus), it’s too much money for a guy with his injury history and attitude. He always annoyed me because it seemed like he’d disappear after he made one play.

The Tennessee Titans can find more affordable, yet better options in the 2013 NFL Draft.

We are little less than a month away from the 2012 NFL Draft. Here is a look at what is going on with teams in the AFC South, as well as some college prospects that could be 1st and 2nd round picks for each team.

Indianapolis Colts: The Indianapolis Colts are losing personnel and changing a philosophy that has been the forefront of a championship caliber team for the last decade. They lost their franchise quarterback in Peyton Manning. Lucky for them, Curtis Painter is less than mediocre, so they are treated with the #1 overall selection in the upcoming draft. New head coach Chuck Pagano will likely work towards a power running game on offense and a 34 look on defense. Defensive end Dwight Freeney has made it known he does not wish to stand up in a 34, so his roll may not change much, but look for Mathis to be an OLB/DE hybrid for Pagano’s club. The Colts were the worst team in the league last year, so it shouldn’t be a surprise they have needs at quarterback, wide receiver, tight end, cornerback, linebacker, defensive tackle, and center.

#1: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford/ Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

#34: Orson Charles, TE, Georgia/ Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson/ Alameda Ta’amu, DT, Washington

Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jacksonville Jaguars are one star defensive end from being a force on defense. With that said, their offense is abysmal. They need help all over the place except at running back. Blaine Gabbert may be their future franchise quarterback, but they will never know unless they keep him upright and surround him with talent. They brought in wide receiver Laurent Robinson, but he is a #2 receiver at best. They need two more weapons on offense to allow wide receiver Mike Thomas to be in the slot where he belongs. Tebow mania isn’t happening, so the Jaguars front office needs to be on their A game and get a blue chip player in the first round that can not only sell tickets, but help this franchise get out of the hole it has fallen into.

#7: Quinton Coples, DE, UNC/ Reilly Reiff, OT, Iowa/ Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina/ Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

#38: Andre Branch, DE, Clemson/ Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse/ Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

Tennessee Titans: The Titans missed out on Peyton Manning, lost Jason Jones, Finnegan and Avery, but did sign free agent guard Steve Hutchinson and defensive end Kamerion Wimbley. Hutch is a vet lineman that will help on the field and in the locker room. Wimbley is a pure pass rusher with abilities nobody on the roster possesses but him. These acquisitions give Tennessee some flexibility with the first pick. They still have holes a center, defensive end, defensive tackle, corner, safety, and could use depth at linebacker and wide receiver. Per sources, Titans staff put Alabama safety Mark Barron through drills at his pro day today.

#20: Nick Perry, DE, USC/ Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois/Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina/ Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama/ Fletcher Cox, DT, Miss. State/ Mark Barron, S, Alabama

#52: Cam Johnson, DE, UVA/ Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson/ Harrison Smith, S, Notre Dame

Houston Texans: The Texans have been active in free agency thus far. They resigned core players Arian Foster and Chris Meyers to long term deals, but lost impact guys like Mario Williams, Demeco Ryans, Mike Brisiel and Eric Winston. Those will be some hard cleats to fill. Brooks Reid and Connor Barwin will be able to offset the loss of Mario and Demeco Ryans played less than 60% of the defensive snaps last season. The losses on the offensive line may hurt the most. Despite question marks at guard and right tackle the Texans will likely look for an offensive weapon to go opposite Andre Johnson.

#26: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor/ Stephen Hill, WR, GT

#58: Andre Branch, DE, Clemson/ Zebrie Sanders, OT, FSU

Another one bites the dust... Bob Donnan-US PRESSWIRE

Yesterday Jason Jones signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks. It’s really surprising they were able to get him for such a cheap contract and that the Titans wouldn’t be able to agree to terms with him on something as cheap as that.

With Jones leaving, the Titans defensive line is getting even thinner. Today DE Mark Anderson of the New England Patriots is supposed to visit the Titans. If they are doing that, I hope they’re at least thinking of doing the same with Kamerion Wimbley. They are both 6-4 and approximately 255 lbs. Wimbley has been more consistent, though he has played at the LB position more since his transition to the NFL.

Though Anderson could be a great depth signing, the Titans need to get someone that they can start across from Derrick Morgan. How about bringing in both Wimbley and Anderson? We’ve only got one DE under contract right now and the Titans need to grab some solid players at that position. After missing out on Mario Williams, Jeremy Mincey, and John Abraham, the Titans can’t afford to miss out on the better DE’s that are left on the market.

Here’s to hoping Manning makes his choice soon so the Titans can get back to more important matters.
