The Tennessee Titans pulled the trigger on the rest of their coaching moves today according to Jim Wyatt and John Glennon of the Tennessean, as the Titans have decided to stick with Dowell Loggains as their offensive coordinator going forward and have moved WR coach Dave Ragone to be their QB coach, which makes sense, seems as Ragone played QB.

The Loggains move was expected and surprises exactly no one. Hopefully he’ll prove to be the secret weapon the Titans are hoping he is, with reports of him being an up-and-coming great. Ragone should do a fine job as the QB coach. He was a good WR coach who was liked by players, but will probably do a better job working with Jake Locker.

Replacing Ragone as WR coach is Shawn Jefferson, who just had his contract expire with the Detroit Lions where he was also the WR coach. He seems to be a good hire. Lions’ WR Calvin Johnson has nothing but praise for him. He also has a brief history as an Oiler, being drafted by them in ’91, the same time Munchak was a Titan. It doesn’t seem that he ever made the team though, as his record shows him as a Charger in ’91.

As for the TE coaching position, the Titans have brought in George Henshaw, previously an OL/TE coach and assistant head coach, being a part of the Oilers/Titans organization from 1997-2005.

Sylvester Croom is the new RB coach for the Titans, moving on from the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to Jim Wyatt, Croom has a pretty good reputation.

As for Jerry Gray, all signs point to him keeping his job as the Titans defensive coordinator.

This all is a bit much to digest, so I’ll let you do that down in the comments if you like. As for me, I’m going to sleep on all these moves. Some I like, some I don’t.

“I am going to be the defensive coordinator for the Titans and I am glad to be working for the Titans,” Gray told the newspaper. “That’s what I’m going to be doing.”

It’s a fortunate thing for the Titans to keep him. There wasn’t any real belief that he’d be chosen as a head coach of any of the teams that he interviewed for but it still gives you a little scare. The Titans have just begun to see his defensive scheming start to unroll and it would be a bit of a set back to lose the coach who set it all in motion.

It’s good to hear he’ll be sticking around.

As Brett Maxie has accepted the Titans secondary coaching positon, here’s a little info from DallasCowboys.com on hit career coaching the Dallas Cowboys Secondary:

In his first season as secondary (safeties) coach for Dallas, Maxie’s tutelage of a defensive secondary helped the unit finish fifth in the NFL by holding opponents to 187.7 passing yards-per-game. Seven of the team’s eight interceptions came by way of a member of the secondary under Maxie’s coaching, including Newman’s then career-high tying and team-leading four interceptions.

In his only season with Miami, Maxie helped oversee a defense that finished fourth in the NFL in passing defense as the Dolphins limited opponents to 188.7 passing yards-per-game. While under his watch, Maxie’s defensive backs also recorded nine of the team’s 14 interceptions during the 2007 season.

As defensive backs coach with the Atlanta Falcons for three seasons (2004-06), he oversaw the development of cornerback DeAngelo Hall, a first-round draft choice in 2004, who totaled 10 interceptions in two seasons (2005-06) and was selected to the NFC Pro Bowl during both of those seasons. In Maxie’s first year with the Falcons, the defense recorded a club-record five touchdowns, four of which came via interceptions.

I wasn’t so high on this interview when it first came out that the Titans wanted to interview him and I still have my doubts, but apparently the Titans don’t. Maxie was the only guy brought in to interview for the position so the Titans must have a good read on him. Lets hope he helps the secondary, who ever may be back there this next year, bring back the fear that the Titans once held as a turnover happy defense.
