Does this trade make sense for the Tennessee Titans

Is Trader Jon up to his old tricks again with the Tennessee Titans?

I firmly believe that the Tennessee Titans 90-man roster you will see over the next few months is missing a few key pieces.

Maybe they won’t all be starters, but at the very least depth pieces and practice squad prospects should be somewhere else right now.

I say that because last year guys like Josh Kline, Dennis Kelly and even Andre Johnson weren’t on the roster yet. Importantly, they all came from different places.

Dennis Kelly wasn’t a star, but he did end up making a big impact on the 2016 Tennessee Titans. That trade for Dorial Green-Beckham ended up being a steal for the Titans.

In a recent Bleacher Report article by Brent Sobleski the Tennessee Titans make another trade, but this time they go after a star.

  • In that piece, the Tennessee Titans trade for New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler. Here is some of what he said:

“Tennessee invested heavily during free agency to sign cornerback Logan Ryan and safety Johnathan Cyprien. The team also selected USC cornerback Adoree’ Jackson with the 18th pick in April’s NFL draft. The overhaul isn’t complete, though. An NFL team needs three good corners in today’s nickle-based league. Pairing Butler with Ryan and letting Jackson learn from both is an ideal scenario.”

I think that is a fair thing to say. In an ideal scenario with this roster, the Tennessee Titans roll out a defense that looks like this in 4 DB sets:

    SS: Johnathan Cyprien

    FS: Kevin Byard

    CB (outside): Logan Ryan

    CB (outside): Malcolm Butler

Then on nickel package the defense would shift to this look:

    SS: Johnathan Cyprien

    FS: Kevin Byard

    CB (outside): Adoree Jackson

    CB (slot): Logan Ryan

    CB (outside): Malcolm Butler

This means that Jackson would not play in the nickel (where I don’t think he should play) and instead he moves Ryan inside to the slot where he has shown he can thrive.

If this was a reasonable trade and not for a first round pick, then I would be all on board for this trade.

This move would give the Tennessee Titans the rare chance to essentially transfer a set of quality starting cornerbacks (that just won a Super Bowl) from one team to another in one season without crippling their offseason of future with bad trades or bad contracts.

Butler would help shut down quicker players while Logan Ryan would focus on the bigger receivers. On nickel downs Adoree would take over Ryan’s spot and move Ryan to where he has been dominant in the past.

I don’t know how you can argue about a CB trio that averages out to be under 25 years old and has four Super Bowl rings.
