An unbiased projection of the Tennessee Titans from Mike Clay.

The offseason is a fascinating time for a lot of teams, but (though I may be biased) I have a hard time thinking anyone is more excited and intrigued than the Tennessee Titans fan base.

Think about it:

-The Titans were one win away from a playoff birth last year.

-They have an easier schedule this year on paper.

-The team is now two offseasons in to the Jon Robinson era.

-Marcus Mariota has everything in front of him to be one of the upper tier quarterbacks in the NFL, and the list keeps going.

Someone who I have really enjoyed watching work this offseason in the national media is Mike Clay.

If you don’t know, Clay works for ESPN and has a show on Sirius XM. He does a lot of work with projections and statistics that I can’t help but find intriguing no matter what the subject.

About a week and a half ago, he rolled out his full season projections and projected draft order for teams which is fascinating.

You read that right, Clay has the Tennessee Titans as the 3rd seed in the AFC with a projected 9 wins.

That win total is more than 26 other teams in the NFL including (obviously) ever team in the AFC South.

On top of that, he released his stat projections for every player on the Tennessee Titans roster this year.

The sort of detail in that work is amazing and I encourage you to comb over it for as long as you want. I am going to mention some things that stand out to me.

I would argue that the yards and total touchdown aren’t the most important thing on that stat line. I’m not talking about health, I am talking about:

-Completion percentage (62%) which is good.

-Touchdown to interception ratio (over 2:1) which is very good.

-Yards per attempt (7.35) which would have been good for 13th best in the NFL last year.

Those are not staggering numbers. The impressive thing is that the projections say that even if Mariota has this season, the Tennessee Titans will win 9 games.

That means that if they underestimate the Titans quarterback, they could be in for an even better season.

    DeMarco Murray

A 1,500 yard season with 11 all-purpose touchdowns is a staggering statline from what fans thought they were getting in Murray just a year ago.

Clay firmly believes that Murray will be a focal point on this offense and that Derrick Henry is going to be very productive, but not the bellcow yet.

    Receiving trio

The Tennessee Titans are projected to have three pass catchers with 800 yards or more next year in Corey Davis, Rishard Matthews and Delanie Walker.

That feat only happened three times last year, and 15 teams had 1 or fewer 800 yard receivers on their team.

So while the Tennessee Titans may be a year away from Corey Davis really taking off and becoming a star according to these projections, the passing offense should be able to win all over the field.

    More from Titan Sized

    Sack leader

Brian Orakpo leads the Tennessee Titans with 9 sacks. While that isn’t as good as he did last year, it is still a solid number for a team’s top edge rusher to tally.

The Tennessee Titans should hope that players like Kevin Dodd step up and preform in a way that doesn’t put all the pressure on Orakpo and Derrick Morgan to be the team’s only real outside pass rushers.

    Interception leader

This is a disappointing statline to see. The Tennessee Titans leader in interceptions is Logan Ryan with just 3. That is not an encouraging sign.

The Titans would only rack up 11 interceptions between all of these starters which would be good for 21st last year tied with Houston and Seattle. This would be a huge issue going into next offseason.

I can’t stress enough how interesting of a follow Clay is, and I encourage you to go check him out now.
