Titans vs. Chargers: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

The Tennessee Titans lost a exciting high scoring affair to the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, 43-35. The game was fun but nerve-racking to watch. Here is this week’s addition of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

The Good.

• Kevin Byard had the best game of his career. He had 5 tackles, including one where he hit Melvin Gordon in the backfield at the goal line.

• Marcus Mariota threw for three touchdowns, two to Rishard Matthews and one to Delanie Walker. He also had another one rushing.

• The red zone defense was very good.

• The Titans showed they were still good in the clutch seconds before halftime, essentially keeping them in the game.

The Bad.

• Marcus Mariota committed 3 costly turnovers, which resulted in 17 points for the Chargers.

• DeMarco Murray just couldn’t get going, rushing 14 times for 51 yards and a touchdown.

• Derrick Henry pulled a muscle in pregame workouts, leaving Antonio Andrews as the breather back.

• The whole first half was terrible. The defense had no clue how to stop Phillip Rivers, Melvin Gordon, or Antonio Gates.

• The Titans secondary wasn’t allowed to breathe on the Chargers receivers without getting an interference penalty.

• While the game was still in reach, the Titans allowed Melvin Gordon to break off a 47 yard run on a 3rd and 7, breaking multiple tackles along the way.

• I’m not sure what it was, but the Titans just seemed off. Especially the offensive line and defensive front seven, which are the two strengths of this team.

The Ugly.

• The Chargers called draw plays and slant passes way too often, sometimes back to back to back, and the Titans couldn’t figure out how to stop them until the fourth quarter.

• Way too many penalties. One included a pass interference on Kendall Wright, which I still can’t figure where they got that call. Another was a pass interference call on Daimion Stafford on the goal line where he pressed the receiver (which he’s allowed to do within 5 yards). That play led to a Chargers touchdown.

• We lost to Ken Wisenhunt, the worst head coach in Titans history.

This was a game that should have, could have, would have been won by the Titans, but none of that counts in the NFL. This game greatly hurt the Titans in their race to win the AFC South division and it doesn’t get any easier from here, as dates with Green Bay, Denver, and Indianapolis all lay up ahead.
