The more I watch the game again and the more I remember last season, the more I am impressed with the Minnesota Vikings, but also the Tennessee Titans.

It is easy to forget now, but the Vikings were all set to beat the Seattle Seahawks in the playoffs in a tight defensive effort and you can see why now.

Up front, they are stout against the run which forced the Titans into throwing the ball more than they wanted. This makes sense because last year, they were 16th in run defense, but they had to play a murderers row of running backs to get there.

  • They played against Carlos Hyde, Jamaal Charles, Matt Forte (twice), Eddie Lacy (twice), Todd Gurley, Latavius Murray, Tevin Coleman, David Johnson, and Thomas Rawls. To stay anywhere in the top half of the league against that slate of teams is very impressive.

Despite a nice game from the offensive line, the Vikings managed to get pressure and make Marcus Mariota uncomfortable outside of the pocket several times. And that isn’t a flash in the pan, last year they were 7th in the NFL in sacks. That is more than teams you would guess would be higher like the L.A. Rams, New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, Cincinnati Bengals, and Arizona Cardinals, so that pass rush is no joke.

You have to remember, against a defense run by Mike Zimmer sacks aren’t the only goal. He wants to make a quarterback feel uncomfortable so they make mistakes. Even Marcus Mariota, who is one of the best in the NFL already at calmly taking what the defenses give him, panicked and threw what ended up to be an interception that really killed the Titans.

The Vikings brought outside pressure to prevent the roll out, and with no other option but a sack, he decided to risk it and throw to a spot where Harry Douglas was supposed to be. Instead, Eric Kendricks ended up taking the ball back 77 yards for a touchdown.

The Titans won’t face a team as athletic and talented as the Vikings all year outside of the Broncos. Unfortunately, they caught Minnesota right out of the gate and the defense was just too much for them.

Honestly, if the Vikings can get anything out of Sam Bradford, the NFL could have a situation reminiscent of the 2015 Super Bowl winning Broncos on their hands. A game managing quarterback that can come in and win tight games thanks to excellent play by the defense and a very good rushing attack.

This Vikings team is built to beat the Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks, and those are the teams that the Titans are trying to become. I think this close game that the Titans could have won will look a lot better in January when we see just how dominant that defense can be when they make a deep run to the playoffs, and they might even make it to the Super Bowl.
