PFF really likes some of the Tennessee Titans, especially the young guys. Could this be the start of a surprising season?

I want to get this out of the way. While I don’t think PFF should be taken as gospel truth, you can’t ignore the mass of data that they collect. They grade every snap of every game film for every team, and therefor watch each NFL player extensively.

So, when PFF (or Pro Football Focus if you didn’t know) says that they like a player you should at the very least take note.

Right now, the guys at PFF are really taking a liking to Tennessee Titans. Look at what they had to say about some of Jon Robinson’s hand picked team.

Superlatives:

PFF has been listing the best players and the best rookies at each position on a week to week basis.

Top graded FB: Jalston Fowler

-Can anyone argue with this? Fowler has been an absolute wrecking ball coming from the backfield. He continues to square up with top-tier defenders and giving them all they want and more. He is going to be a force for this offense this season.

  • Top graded rookie RB: Derrick Henry

-Speaking wrecking balls: Derrick Henry. I have compared his style of running to someone running through rain with defenders beading up and rolling off of his back, and that is just when he lowers his shoulder pads.

When he is in the open field rarely if ever does anyone take him down on the first shot. He always shakes “quicker” players or finds ways to break through their arm tackles. Thank goodness the L.A. Rams wanted Jared Goff so bad, or the Titans wouldn’t have ended up with Henry.

Top graded rookie WR: Tajae Sharpe

-14. There were 14 wide receivers taken in the 2016 NFL Draft before the Tennessee Titans called Tajae Sharpe’s name. His success is all do to his work ethic and precision. Since day one he has refused to slack or take anything for granted in Tennessee and that makes him a perfect fit for a player like Marcus Mariota and the Titans.

I mean honestly, writing that paragraph gave me chills because those are the same words used so many times over the years to describe great players that ended up in New England. Jon Robinson is changing this culture and showing his skills as a GM, just look at a 5th round draft pick who is making noise already.

    Game Analysis

So, the Tennessee Titans had a dominant performance against the Oakland Raiders on Saturday. In the preseason’s most serious game, the Titans offense scored on every possession with their starters in on offense. They also had some impressive plays when the backups were in against the Raider’s 2nd team.

They detailed why some of that happened here in their game analysis. The Titans bookends Taylor Lewan and rookie Jack Conklin earned the team’s highest grades and PFF described their game like this:

“Young tackles Jack Conklin and Taylor Lewan had their best games of the preseason, earning the two highest offensive grades for the Titans. They kept QB Marcus Mariota very clean on his 18 dropbacks, allowing him to be hit only once.”

They were maulers in the running game, and the only hit they allowed was on a play where Marcus Mariota stretched it out with his legs to buy time for the receivers to make a move. The play ended up in a first down pass to Andre Johnson which allowed the drive to continue and points to be put on the board.

Honestly, PFF is loving Tennessee and why wouldn’t they? If there was a metric to judge a GM based on the changes he has made (other than wins) I have to think Jon Robinson would be on some pretty historic pace.

He has taken a team devoid of talent and turned them into a deep roster. Not only that, but he has turned a team that couldn’t run with ANY consistency last year and has turned them into the schoolyard bully taking other kid’s lunch money.

This team looks poised for success and PFF’s grades reflect that, so if you aren’t on already there is plenty of room on the Titans bandwagon for everyone.
