First Down And Tenn: Tennessee Titans OTA Weekly Wrap

Tennessee Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt has guaranteed that if healthy, Marcus Mariota will be the starting quarterback when the 2015 football season starts, but he has made no such guarantees with the wide receivers currently on the roster. In fact, the Titans have given themselves a lot of options heading into training camp to give their new quarterback some great targets. I don’t think anyone is safe.

Make or break time arrives for Justin Hunter with Titans – Terry McCormick 247 Report

The clock is now ticking for Justin Hunter.

The Tennessee Titans have had high hopes for Hunter ever since trading up to draft him in the second round in 2013.
But after two disappointing seasons – 18 catches as a rookie, 28 last year – it is time for Hunter to get better or for the Titans to examine other options.

That much was made clear by Tennessee’s off-season moves. They signed veterans Harry Douglas and Hakeem Nicksand then drafted talented receiver Dorial Green-Beckham in the second round this year.

"“There’s a lot of competition in the room, and we’re all pushing each other,” Hunter said."

Hunter already knows what is at stake for him this season.

"“I’ve got to stay focused. I’ve got to get it going. I’m going into my third year, I’ve got to prove it,” he said."

We’ve all drooled over the Dorial Green-Beckham highlight video enough by now. In fact, I have had to change bibs a few times myself. It’s time to shake yourself back into reality by realizing that OTA’s are concluding and the NFL season is closer but still a ways off.

What OTA’s have showed us about Green-Beckham so far is that he is not in playing shape yet and has a hamstring pull. OTA’s have also showed us that he looks like a man among boys athletically. There I go again, drooling.

Nonetheless, what I will offer you here is a picture of the potential floor and ceiling of the 2015 Titans receivers. With OTA’s revving up you are closer to being on the clock in September, when it will be time to make your fantasy picks. Are you picking Justin Hunter, or Green-Beckham? Here goes my take:

Tennessee Titans Rumors: Hakeem Nicks, Kendall Wright Released if Harry Douglas Starter with Dorial Green Beckham, Justin Hunter as Marcus Mariota Impresses? – Lauren Moranor SWR

With a new era of Tennessee Titans football underway, several players have been brought on to the roster in hopes of bringing the team some needed success. The Titans drafted Marcus Mariota as the likely new face of the franchise while loading up on wide receiver talent to help him out. One of those receivers is Hakeem Nicks who is currently fighting for a roster spot while seeking a career turnaround.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before:

It’s time for Justin Hunter to step up and make a significant impact on the Titans’ offense.

That expectation has followed Hunter since he arrived as a second-round pick out of the University of Tennessee in 2012. He is the kind of tall, talented wide receiver that projects as a major asset in the passing game.

Veteran receiver Hakeem Nicks is just 27 and says he’s got time fora career resurgence, writes Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean.

Once again the talk is of Justin Hunter’s need to get it together or get passed by. “At some point, you either get it or you won’t be in this league anymore,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “That’s the natural order of the NFL.” David Climer of The Tennessean chimes in.

"“I’ve got to stay focused,” Hunter said per Terry McCormick of 247. “I’ve got to get it going. I’m going into my third year, I’ve got to prove it.”"

Rookie receiver Dorial Green-Beckham was out with a hamstring injury but paid attention to veterans at practices this week. Video from the team’s web site.

The story behind Marcus Mariota, Ryan Succop and No. 8 – Jim Wyatt The Tennessean

Have you heard the one about the arm-wrestling contest between Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota and kicker Ryan Succop for the No. 8 jersey?

Well, apparently some didn’t realize Succop was only pulling everyone’s leg with the social media prank.

"“I think some people thought it was serious, that it was real,” Succop said with a smile. “People were tweeting at me and sending me messages on Instagram, ‘Bro, just let (Mariota) have it. He’s the Heisman Trophy winner. He’s the first-round pick."
