Tennessee Titans Sign Shaun Phillips to 2-Year Deal, Worth $6 Million

Shaun Phillips is coming off a season when he had 10 sacks. He joins the Tennessee Titans having recorded at least 9.5 sacks in three of his last four seasons. His two-year, $6 million deal with $2.5 million guaranteed gives this team an affordable player who has an abundance of experience in a 3-4 defense. Not only did the Titans need depth but they needed a starter in case one of the top three pass-rush specialists (Jadeveon Clowney, Khalil Mack, and Anthony Barr) don’t fall to them at No. 11.

Versatility is the name of the game for Ray Horton‘s defense. Phillips has experience as a 3-4 outside linebacker and 4-3 defensive end. That provided extra value for Horton’s hybrid scheme. Signing Phillips takes some of the pressure off of drafting an outside linebacker with the No. 11 pick. That said, this team still needs more depth and a young player who can grow into the role. At age 33, Phillips isn’t anything more than a short-term option.
