Tennessee Titans 2014 NFL Free Agency: Evaluating Expiring Contracts

These are players who, even if they’re re-signed to league-minimum contracts, very likely won’t survive the August roster cuts. These are players who I’m indifferent about whether they’re kept or they walk away.

  • Jackie Battle. Later this year, Battle turns age 31. He’s a decent option as a goal-line back although Tennessee has that with Shonn Greene. With or without Chris Johnson, the Titans could use some younger legs in their backfield.
  • Rusty Smith. Smith can compete with Tyler Wilson and anyone else for the No. 3 job. That said, I’m not expecting Coach Whisenhunt to use one of his 53-man roster spots to develop a 27-year-old quarterback who has thrown five passes since 2011.
  • Chris Spencer / Rob Turner / Mike Otto. Before the start of next season, all three of the aforementioned offensive linemen will have reached a minimum of age 30. The Titans will likely replace David Stewart. I could see these guys coming back if they’re willing to accept veteran-minimum salaries and compete for jobs in August.
  • Damian Williams. Here’s a wide receiver who hasn’t lived up to his potential. That’s largely because he has been buried down the depth chart. I’m a little curious about his mysterious inactivation from the Arizona Cardinals matchup and whether that has anything to do with Delanie Walker’s comments about 6-7 team cancers.
