(Just ignore that typo on “between.” Moving on…)
Last week, Titan Sized asked readers whether they’d be satisfied with Alabama safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix at No. 10. NFL Mocks writer Erik Lambert had him going to Tennessee in his first 2014 NFL Mock Draft. Here’s a review of his pick and the poll that you see above.
This wasn’t an overly popular selection. Most fans seem content with Michael Griffin and Bernard Pollard handling the safety spots. Even those fans who aren’t satisfied with Griffin understand that his 2012 contract extension basically makes him a lock for the 2014-15 NFL season. He had a good year so he’s not going anywhere.
Is Clinton-Dix a realistic option? Only if the team doesn’t re-sign Pollard, who’ll test free agency this offseason. The Titans must also consider what they should do with Alterraun Verner. Losing both of these players may provide catastrophic results on the progress that they made from a 2012 defense that surrendered a franchise-worst 471 points.
Fans who prefer Clinton-Dix over Pollard may want a safety who excels in pass coverage. Pollard’s value comes with his hard-hitting presence and the attitude that he brings to the rest of the unit. Pollard has expressed an interest in returning, although he hasn’t guaranteed anything and he’ll want to see what happens with the head-coaching situations.
This is the type of mock draft pick that people may change their mind on after free agency pans out and there’s a clearer view of the 2014-15 roster. Obviously a problem with early mock drafts.
