An AFC wild-card participant? That dream was short-lived. Don’t expect to relive it anytime before 2014, neither.
The Tennessee Titans lost control of their grip on the AFC’s No. 6 playoff seed after they suffered a Week 13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, 22-14. This was another week when the defense held their opponent to five-plus field-goal attempts. Unlike Oakland Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski (4-of-6), Adam Vinatieri nailed all five of his chances. His fifth make put them up 15-14, a lead they’d never relinquish.
A couple of the game’s biggest turning points came on Titans penalties and turnovers. Moise Fokou was penalized before the end of the first half. That turned a dead drive into one last chip-shot field-goal attempt. This turned a 9-7 Titans deficit into a 12-7 deficit. Another turning point came when Ryan Fitzpatrick was blindsided on a sack from Robert Mathis. Up 14-12 and inside the Colts 40-yard-line, the Titans not only wasted an opportunity to take a two-possession lead, but they gift-wrapped a three-point opportunity for Indianapolis.
They took it.
