Tennessee Titans Release Fernando Velasco, Reach 53 Players

That was unexpected. At the same time, it’s somewhat expected that one surprise will happen during the day of NFL roster cuts.

Fernando Velasco went from entering Tennessee Titans training camp as last season’s starting center to becoming the last of 22 players who were either released or placed on injured reserve before the 53-man roster cuts were finalized on Aug. 31 at 5:00 p.m. Central Time. Earlier this offseason, Velasco had signed a $2.023 million restricted tender offer.

Winning that swing position battle was 31-year-old offensive lineman Chris Spencer. Coaches must’ve thought that Spencer was a better option as a reserve guard. While Velasco has experience at center, the Titans already had Brian Schwenke backing up Rob Turner. He joins a list of reserves that include Byron Stingily, Mike Otto and Schwenke. This gives the Titans nine offensive linemen. Turner will begin the season as the starting center.

Check back at Titan Sized for a full 53-man roster and evaluations on players who were kept and released. Some things to take note of: Michael Preston remains on the 53-man roster. Rusty Smith—good luck.
