George Wilson: Tennessee Titans Safety Fined for Horse Collar Tackle

Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean reports that Tennessee Titans safety George Wilson has been fined for his horse collar tackle during an Aug. 17 preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Wilson plans to appeal what’s allegedly a $15,000 fine.

Wilson is the third Titans defensive player who has been fined this preseason. Bernard Pollard and Nigel Nicholas were both fined for hits during the preseason opener (Aug. 8). Pollard was fined $10,000 for an out-of-bounds hit on Washington Redskins receiver Aldrick Robinson. Nicholas was fined $15,750 for a roughing-the-passer infraction on No. 3 quarterback Pat White.

Nothing too surprising when compared to other penalties around the NFL. Check out this hit from Chicago Bears linebacker Jon Bostic. Bostic was fined $21,000. It appears like a perfect form tackle, however, the NFL apparently fined Bostic because he lowered his head and made forcible contact with a defenseless player’s body. Bostic was not penalized on that play.

(This is legal though).

It’s always interesting—and baffling—to see which defensive plays don’t result in a fine, which ones do and the amount of those fines. With Gregg Williams and Bernard Pollard, Titans fans may have plenty of comparisons to make.
