Jerry Gray Coach Approval Rating Poll: Start of Training Camp

Throughout training camp and the entire regular season, Titan Sized will conduct weekly fan approval rating polls for head coach Mike Munchak, offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, defensive coordinator Jerry Gray and quarterback Jake Locker. Munchak and Gray have been responsible for two playoff-less seasons. Locker played most of last season with a bum shoulder. Late last season, Loggains took over for Chris Palmer.

Earlier on August 5, Titan Sized began this process when they asked readers for their approval ratings on Coach Munchak. Titan Sized will continue with a look at the man who’s in charge of the defense, Jerry Gray.

Tired of hearing about all the talent that’s stashed on the Titans defense? Talent doesn’t mean much if the end results include a franchise-worst 471 points allowed. That’s what happened in 2012. Despite coaching changes galore, Gray managed to keep his job as defensive coordinator. One main difference: Gregg Williams has joined the staff as a senior assistant to the defense.

Those nine aforementioned players are all back from that historically inept defense. Each player is expected to play a significant part in the new scheme. Big things are expected from third-round pick Blidi Wreh-Wilson. Veteran free agents such as Bernard Pollard, Sammie Lee Hill and Moise Fokou are expected to add depth and stability to a defense that had many glaring deficiencies.

For Gray, there are no more excuses. Even in 2011, this defense was far too “bend-but-don’t-break.” This unit has talent. It’s up to the coaches to get it out of them and put them in positions to succeed. Gray must make the decisions on whether someone like Alterraun Verner is outcasted because he doesn’t fit the new man-press schemes. Can he get the most out of situational talents like Karl Klug?
