No surprise here. When a player fails to record an NFL statistic, they can’t expect a passing grade from the fan base. All of his book smarts and high-quality character attributes won’t save Rolle from what may end as the only “failing grade” that the the former Rhodes Scholar ever receives.
There’s no shame in that. At age 26, Rolle has a long career ahead of him as a neurosurgeon. He’ll make a more significant impact as a doctor than he would’ve if he played football on Sundays. A long-term professional football life just wasn’t meant for him. Now he can enter his doctor career before he sustains any type of football injury that would’ve impacted his short-term or long-term health.
I do wonder what would’ve happened had Rolle been given the chance that Robert Johnson was. Johnson was a fifth-round pick from that same draft. If the Titans were confident that Rolle would’ve stayed in football, would he have developed into a game-changer at safety? At the least, would Rolle have been better than Johnson? We’ll never know.
Stay tuned as Titan Sized continues this series of 2010 NFL Draft report cards.
