Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak and offensive line coach Bruce Matthews are determined to be more of a physical presence on the practice field this season.
Physicality is something these two Hall of Fame offensive linemen know a lot about. The two endured the same NFL trenches alongside each other for 10 years. Now they are doing their best to impart some of the knowledge they gained on this revamped Titans offensive line.
There have only been a few days of practices but Munchak and Matthews have already been more of a physical presence. It is something that Munchak got away from a little bit in his first two seasons as head coach. He seems pretty excited about getting to work with Matthews more.
“That’s something Bruce and I talked about last year; him and I working together more with the line.” Munchak said after practice. “This gives me a chance to be hands-on with the guys on a daily basis.”
Why is so much attention being paid to the offensive line? A number of things contribute to the offseason focus on making the line better. First, the struggles of last season forced the Titans to address the interior and depth of the offensive line. Coincidentally, the Titans brought in a number of high talent offensive linemen. When a team uses their first-round pick on a guard, there is going to be more focus on that position.
This is part of Munchak’s growth as a head coach. He has learned to delegate more effectively and he is focusing on his personal strengths. This is a make-or-break season for Munchak and it seems he is staring to embrace the pressure.
Mike Munchak is focusing more on where he is most comfortable: down in the trenches next to his old pal, Bruce Matthews.
