The Tennessee Titans haven’t started re-signing any of their own players yet, but they have been testing the early free agent waters, having offered a contract to DT Chris Canty who was cut from the New York Giants and having a visit scheduled with safety George Wilson.
There hasn’t been much talk on the side of re-signing some of their key free agents, which consist of TE Jared Cook, OL Fernando Velasco, and K Rob Bironas.
Jared Cook appears to be getting slapped with the franchise tag and Velasco seems like a re-sign no-brainer, while Bironas has a big question mark on him. He was hoping to get a contract extension before the season started:
This is the last year of my contract.” said Bironas, “Obviously I started my career here, and I want to end it here. I hope the Titans get something together before the season starts, so I’m not trying out for another 31 teams.
Bironas is 35 this year, though age is somewhat irrelevant with kickers, as they generally don’t take a beating during their careers and just focus on keeping their legs healthy. That being said, Bironas had his worst season since 2006, missing six kicks.
The Titans could look for a kicker in the NFL draft in April. They could also look to free agency for a kicker. One of the most accurate kickers in NFL history, Nate Kaeding, will be a free agent. Kaeding has struggled through some injuries the past few seasons, but before that he had a spotless health record. He’s also four years younger than Bironas.
It’s hard to say what the Titans will do. Bironas has been a solid player for them, but the fact that they haven’t touched on the subject all year makes you think that he could very well be testing free agency.
