Gregg Williams to Tennessee Titans a Surprising Move?

Were you as surprised to hear about the Tennessee Titans bringing in Gregg Williams as I was? The Titans have spent the entire offseason promoting people from within the organization and this is one of the few steps they’ve made into the outside world, and it’s a step towards a guy who’s climbing out of a bounty system scandal that sent some waves throughout the NFL.

That seems kind of counter-intuitive to most of the ideals that Munchak pushes. He likes character and being a professional, and I’m not saying that Williams isn’t either of those, but he’ll certainly be carrying a bit of a breeze with him as he comes in the door that will take a little while to blow by.

Williams was a part of the Titans defense that got them to their one and only Super Bowl. He’s synonymous with mean defenses, bounty-gate aside, and perhaps that’s the biggest reason the Titans are so interested in bringing him in. The Titans defense has lost the mean streak that made it one of the best defenses in the league for so long.

According to Jim Wyatt, Williams hiring won’t push Jerry Gray out of a job. The question in the forefront of my mind: How much of an affect will Williams have on the defense? Will he be working side by side with Gray to bring the defense back up to par or will he just make minor touches here or there?

What do you think? How much will Williams change the Titans defense and their mindset?
