You can add another player to the Tennessee Titans IR list as they placed MLB Colin McCarthy on it yesterday. It’s been a rough season for McCarthy, who was originally injured in the Titans season opener when a teammate rolled up on his ankle and was subsequently injured later in the season, sustaining a problematic concussion.
McCarthy was only able to record playing time in seven of the Titans games this season thanks to injuries. Most of that seems to be bad luck, but it does raise concern about his health in the long run. As we’ve seen with Kenny Britt and a million other professional athletes, sometimes there’s just no fully healing for these guys, whose careers don’t lend proper time to their bodies.
While I think it’s too soon to say that for McCarthy, the Titans may be tempted with other options, such as if LB Manti Te’o falls to the with what looks to be an early pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Though it’s not the biggest need on the Titans list, when you have a talent, such as a LB who almost won the Heisman, it’s very hard to pass up on.
McCarthy is my guy and a great leader on the Titans defense, but when he’s gone he leaves a big hole. This year it was amplified by the fact that LB Zac Diles, a man who seemed to be his competent back up, was put on IR early in the season. The Titans will certainly be thinking the position over and should be planning on adding some depth to the LB group anyway.
The Titans have promoted FB Collin Mooney to the 53 man roster to fill McCarthy’s spot.
