The Tennessee Titans and FS Michael Griffin have agreed on a five-year contract extension worth approximately $35 million with $15 million in guaranteed. Griffin has played in 80 games since being drafted 19th overall in 2007, starting 73 of those games.
Griffin was a beast in his first few seasons but his play has since leveled off. He set the bar high for himself when he recorded seven interceptions and eleven deflections in 2008, only his second year in the league.
Griffin’s best play came behind one of the best defensive lines in the NFL. It was a line that sported the likes of Albert Haynesworth, Kyle Vanden Bosch, and Jevon Kearse. The lines play has since fallen off but may very well find itself resurrected this year by the play of young players such as DT’s Jurrell Casey and Karl Klug, as well as new DE Kamerion Wimbley and a healthy Derrick Morgan.
Griffin is surrounded by talent, including the young CB duo of McCourty and Verner, as well as a young promising linebacker group. If there was ever a time for Griffin to return to form and silence any doubts about his play, this would be the time.
I hope to see it. I miss watching him make these plays…
