The Tennessee Titans have signed C/G Jon Cooper, formerly of the Minnesota Vikings.
Cooper was a three-year starter in Oklahoma during his college career and earned Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year in his senior season. He was signed as an undrafted free agent after the 2009 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He recording playing time in one game his rookie year and twelve his second year, including one start.
Cooper was released by the Vikings as the start of the 2011 NFL season and was a free agent until the Titans signed him today.
The Titans have had C Kevin Matthews practicing with the first-team offense, that is until Eugene Amano recently returned from injury.
The center position has the biggest question mark on it headed into the 2012 season. It has been like that for some time now it seems. Here’s a list, courtesy of NashvilleCityPaper.com, that compiles all the starts of players at the center position for the Titans since 1999:
• Center: Kevin Mawae, 61; Justin Hartwig, 47; Kevin Long, 33; Eugene Amano, 32; Gennaro DiNapoli, 18; Bruce Matthews, 13; Fernando Velasco, 2; Leroy Harris, 1; Kevin Matthews, 1.
Mawae was the anchor for the Titans line. It hasn’t been the same since he left. Here’s to hoping the Titans have found the fix before the first regular season game.
