Today was the first day for media members were allowed into the Tennessee Titans OTA’s. Thank God. We were running a little short on news. Now lets get to today’s top note from the Titans training.
• As C Eugene Amano and G Leroy Harris are sidelined with injuries, both C Kevin Matthews and C/G Fernando Velasco are getting reps with the starters this week. Both could be in line to steal the starting positions from the aforementioned players. This is one of the biggest position battles to watch during camp and the preseason.
“He’s (Matthews’) getting a ton of reps,” coach Mike Munchak said. “He’s very instinctive, as a free agent coming in that’s why he’s hung on and made the team.”
• The QB competition is on and it’s already looking good. The QB’s are splitting the reps 50/50.
On Friday, both Hasselbeck and Locker had their share of nice throws. Hasselbeck showed great touch on a pass to Damian Williams over Chris Hawkins, and the veteran later hooked up with first-round draft pick Kendall Wright on a long pass where the rookie beat cornerback Alterraun Verner. Locker found Wright himself on a throw out to the left sideline that the receiver had to go down for because the quarterback was avoiding Verner again on the coverage.
Both QB’s seemed to have a good day and it’s nice to see Wright already making an impression early on.
• Kenny Britt watched today’s action from the sideline today as he waits for his knee to fully repair from the scoping it got a week or so ago. Munchak expects him to be ready for training camp, though I wouldn’t hold my breath if you’re hoping to see him play in some preseason games.
