Tennessee Titans Draft Needs

Today Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean posted an article ranking each position of the Tennessee Titans on how high their need at that position is headed into the draft.

I agree with him on most of the positions but there’s a couple I’m shaking my head at a little bit. Here’s the whats and whys:

"QUARTERBACKS• On the roster: Matt Hasselbeck, Jake Locker, Rusty Smith.• Status report: The Peyton Manning saga now just a memory, it’s time to see who emerges from the competition between the veteran (Hasselbeck) and the kid (Locker). With no lockout to get in the way this offseason, Locker should be much better prepared to push Hasselbeck.• Need: Low."

Now yes, I understand that we have Locker and Hasselbeck fighting for the starting position this off-season but if you say one nice thing about Rusty Smith…! Add in the fact that Hasselbeck is an aged QB with only two seasons left in the league, you’ve got some need. Rusty Smith has done less than nothing, throwing two to three picks to a guy with a cast on his arm during the only start of his career.

I’m not saying they’re gonna take one with any high sort of pick, but they could take another sixth or seventh round. Basically anyone but Rusty Smith.

"CORNERBACKS• On the roster: Jason McCourty, Alterraun Verner, Ryan Mouton, Tommie Campbell, Chris Hawkins, Terrence Wheatley.• Status report: The Titans lost free agent Cortland Finnegan to the Rams, and while two proven cornerbacks return in McCourty and Verner, so do plenty of question marks. Mouton is coming off of an Achilles injury, while Campbell and Hawkins are raw and largely untested. The Titans will be tempted if a top corner falls to them early in the draft.• Need: Medium/High."

I think the need is too high on this one. It’s not like if the Titans don’t draft someone there will be wide spread panic through out Titan Nation that the Titans are doomed. McCourty and Verner are both fine young cornerbacks that are capable of playing at high levels. Hawkins played quite well against a Saints offense that was one of the most powerful in the league this last year. Mouton has a lot to prove coming back off an Achilles injury and while Campbell has potential, we’re still not sure how much.

I like over three of our cornerbacks. I’m not opposed to adding another awesome one, I’m just saying it’s not that high of a priority.

Overall I agree with Wyatt, I just differ from him on those two positions. Be sure to tune in tomorrow morning as I release my full Titans seven-round mock draft!
