John Abraham just inked a new 3-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons. He was the last top-end DE available in free agency. Now what Tennessee?
The Titans have no depth at DE and now look to have no sure-fire starter across from Morgan. Thanks to Bud Adams drive to get Peyton Manning, the Titans have missed out on all the top-tier DE’s in free agency. It’s almost unforgivable. DE was a huge need coming into free agency and that was no secret.
In a recent development, Kamerion Wimbley of the Oakland Raiders has been released. Wimbley played as a 4-3 DE in college but was moved to LB in the NFL due to his size (255 lbs). He has moved back and forth between the DE and LB position and is certainly an interesting player for the Titans to look at. He doesn’t match the size that Jerry Gray likes in his DE’s, but the Titans are running out of options. I’d expect them to show some interest in him.
Drafting a BPA like Mark Barron or a WR with the first pick is basically out of the question now, as you can almost guarantee they’ll be taking a DE.
That’s a scary prospect.
None of this years top DE prospects are hugely exciting players. They all have flaws that make one question how well their skills will translate to the NFL. Quinton Coples, Nick Perry, Whitney Mercilus, and Melvin Ingram will all be getting a pretty serious look from the Titans. There’s a good chance one or two of those guys is still available when the Titans pick at 20.
Hopefully this Manning situation will end soon, before the Titans miss out on anything else in free agency.
