Tennessee Titans: Will They Use the Franchise Tag?

facebooktwitterreddit

The Tennessee Titans have under 48 hours to decide if they’ll you the franchise tag or not. The speculation has been that the Titans plan on putting the tag on Michael Griffin. As of now though, no one has heard anything on that front as the deadline grows nearer.

Perhaps the Titans are waiting it out to see just who gets given the tag and who’ll most likely slip to free agency. The likes of at least Redskins safety LaRon Landry seem be headed for free agency as the Redskins recently put the franchise tag on TE Fred Davis after a well played season. That’s at least one free agent the Titans could be looking at to bring in an replace Michael Griffin.

There has been no indication that the Titans plan on using the tag on soon-to-be free agent Cortland Finnegan. Finnegan was looking for a long term deal that  would pay him as one of the best CB’s in the league. They Titans have been pretty inflexible in their negotiations and don’t seem to have come up on the price they offered to Finnegan back before the 2011 season.

The Titans still have quite a few players head for free agency, only having given new contracts to TE Craig Stevens, WR Lavelle Hawkins, and OT Mike Otto. It’ll be interesting if the rest of the remaining players hit free agency. There are some pretty big names for the Titans, the top three being DE/DT Jason Jones, FS Michael Griffin, and Cortland Finnegan.

In the end, it doesn’t really look like anyone will be getting the tag. We’ll just have to wait and see what the Titans brass are planning… Mark Barron, anyone?
