The Titans came away with what amounted to a blowout win over the Carolina Panthers, who even had me believing they were due. No doubt giving hope to Titans fans everywhere that competition for the Wild Card spots in the AFC will include the Titans come December…..if not competition for the division. The Titans have improved to a 5-4 record, while the Panthers dropped to 2-7.
So, what made the difference? Chris Johnson. Really! CJ accepted his 27 carries and turned in a 130 yard rushing performance (4.8 per carry) and one touchdown. With the running game becoming the key focus of the Panthers defense, WR Damian Williams managed to turn in a 100-yd effort. Again, I’m not making this up.
The most impressive aspect of the game goes to the Titans defense. Yes, the defense that just held rookie QB sensation Cam Newton to just over 200 yards passing and effectively limited WR Steve Smith to 33 yards.
Return Specialist Marc Mariani took a punt 79 yards for a score. DB Jason McCourty led the team with 7 total tackles. Akeem Ayers, Jason Jones, Cortland Finnegan and Will Witherspoon were each credited with a sack while Sen’Derrick Marks and William Hayes were credited with half a sack a piece.
If you’re a fan of balance, you will love this stat: The Titans recorded 8 first downs on the ground and 9 through the air.
