Chris Johnson Loses a Year

I’ve been doing a lot of research on CJ2K over the last few days, but I failed to mention one big detail. Chris Johnson has now lost a year of accrued time toward free agency. That’s right, according to the new NFL CBA, all players not in camp by August 9th, lose an accrued year of service.

If you remember last year, San Diego Wideout Vincent Jackson (pictured) held out in order to get a better contract, but he did sign his small, one-year contract late in the year in order to accrue a year toward NFL Free Agency. 2011 will work differently. There is no waiting until late in the season before the cut-off date to start showing up at the team facility, the waiting ended on Tuesday.

Johnson, unlike Jackson, has two more years until he becomes a free agent, actually since he didn’t sign by August the 9th, Johnson cannot become an unrestricted Free Agent until 2013. 4 years of play are required to become an UFA and if Johnson plays the 2011 season, even every game, it will not count for an accrued season toward free agency. Johnson must wait until 2013. But hey! Why wait when he can hold out for a better deal now? Johnson’s current contract ends after the 2012 season, so there really will be no difference in the end, as the Titans do not seem willing to budge from the current contract/agreement regardless of Johnson’s play to date and capability for the future….or lack thereof depending what article you read.
