NFL Update: Titans Release DT Tony Brown, Vince Young Next

Per Jim Wyatt of the Tennesseean, the Titans will…..and yeah you read the title.

So, Tony Brown, why would he get released?

His contract is not necessarily outrageous and there were only two more years remaining on this:

4/21/2010: Signed a three-year, $17 million contract.

The deal includes $7.5 million guaranteed.

2011: $4 million, 2012: $5.121 million, 2013: Free Agent

Injuries:

As Wyatt reported in January, Brown did have his knee scoped.

After joining the Titans in 2006, Brown has consistently given the team around 4 sacks a year and seemed to have a solid chance of disrupting the backfield on most plays. However, Brown’s play dropped off since the departure of Albert Haynesworth leading some to question the Titans decision to not match the Redskins offer to Haynesworth even more, but this is about Brown.

For what it’s worth, my best guess as to why he was released is age. Brown will turn 31 in September. The Titans drafted two defensive tackles in 2011.

3rd round–Jurell Casey

7th round–Zach Clayton

Add in SenDerrick Marks, Kareem Brown and Malcolm Sheppard and the stable seems full. I’m not sure if age and injury possibility really are the main factors in his release but we may see soon enough.

By the way, did you know that the Titans are releasing Vince Young today?
