Chris Johnson Wants a New Contract

It’s being reported all over the web that CJ2K himself, the man who ran for over 2,000 yards in 2009 wants a new contract. He dropped to 1,324 yards this past season. Does he deserve a new contract in this “What have you done for me lately league”?

Here is Johnson’s contract:

7/26/2008: Signed a five-year, $12 million contract. The deal contains $7 million guaranteed, including $1.125 million in first-year bonuses, a $3.86 million roster bonus in the second year, and a $1.25 million “signing” bonus in the third. Another $235,000 is available through “likely to be earned” incentives based on a 4.5 yards-per-carry average and 700 yearly rushing yards. 2011: $800,000, 2012: $2.21 million, 2013: Free Agent

I’m already voting yes, but let’s compare this contract to others around the league while keeping in mind that Jonson ranks as a top-3 runningback to nearly everyone who watches and plays football.

Maurice Jones-Drew (Jaguars) is a runningback within the division who compares to Johnson in his effectiveness to impact a game.

4/15/2009: Signed a five-year, $30.95 million contract. The deal contains $17.5 million guaranteed, including a $9 million signing bonus and Jones-Drew’s base salaries in years one and two. Another $1.8 million is available through incentives. 2011: $4.05 million, 2012: $4.45 million, 2013: $4.95 million, 2014: Free Agent

Adrian Peterson is another star runningback(Vikings)

2011: $10.72 million, 2012: Free Agent

Corey Mcintre (Bills)….who?

9/6/2010: Signed a three-year, $2.480 million contract. 2011: $950,000, 2012: $900,000, 2013: Free Agent

That’s more than Johnson.

Josh Brown, the kicker for the Rams:

2/29/2008: Signed a five-year, $14.2 million contract. The deal included a $4 million signing bonus. 2011: 2.6 million, 2012: $2.7 million, 2013: Free Agent

Dan Orlovsky, the backup Quarterback for the Texans. The guy that ran out of the end zone trying to make a play for the Lions in their 0-16 season where they went defeated….

2011: $2.75 million, 2012: Free Agent

Yeah, I’ll say Johnson needs a raise.
