In an announcement that should come as no surprise, the Titans are likely to keep Britt, who keeps placing himself in situations that are just plan dumb. After the most recent of incidents where he crushed a rolled cigar that police merely suspected to contain marijuana, Britt, his character, and his standing with the team were all on some level a question mark.
Thankfully, for the team’s sake, Britt (who has never been known as a locker room problem) now has “no chance” of being cut even after his sixth, yes sixth, arrest since April of 2009. The Titans consider him their second best player and a possible top-5 wide receiver.
What would you do? I think keeping Britt is the right move simply because you don’t want to have to guard him and he’s never done any wrong towards the team or the players.
Except when he gets arrested 6 times after the team has become dependent on such a fantastic wide receiver who will find himself getting punished by the commissioner. Then the team cannot be dependent on Britt. That’s bad news for any player if the team ever finds itself thinking it cannot depend on you.
I say at the least they give him one more year and see how he acts. They could trick him by offering a raise in his contract with stipulations that he remains out of jail and on good terms with the team, as far as his off-field behavior. Something similar to the “diva clause” that 49ers WR Michael Crabtree received, they could call it the “Good Boy” clause. It would entertain me and serve a purpose, I’m all for it.
