Just in from ESPN, Jim Schwartz has reached an agreement to become the next coach of the Detroit Lions, fresh off of a 0-16 season. This has been coming for about a week now, so it should be no surprise to Titans fans. Schwartz put in his time here in Tennessee, and he deserves as much of the credit for turning this defense back into the dominant force that they were under Greg Williams in the mid-to-late 90′s as anybody does. Needless to say, he’s got a helluva job in front of him. Best of luck Schwartzy.
So, who will be the leading candidate to fill this new void? Well, if the Titans choose to fill the position from within, two candidates pop out immediately: Dave McGinnis (Assistant Head Coach/Linebackers) and Chuck Cecil (Defensive Backs coach). McGinnis has had both defensive coordinator and head coaching experience from his days with the Arizona Cardinals, and Cecil is considered one of the bright young minds in the NFL and has done a terrific job in coaching one of the league’s best secondaries.
All signs point to Fisher choosing one of these two guys, but who really knows? We may see a darkhorse candidate here over the next few days, but the only mention of a guy being brought in from outside of the organization was former Titans DC Greg Williams. With him now on his way to New Orleans, the Titans have one less option on the table (which for what it’s worth, I think is a good thing. Williams isn’t the same guy that he was here a decade ago). Whatever decision is made, I expect it to be quick one.
