The AP reported a few days ago that former Tennessee Titans wide receiver Tyrone Calico faces indictment on drunken driving charges after a Nashville judge sent his case to the grand jury. I hope Calico can rebound from this. From all accounts, he seems like a genuinely nice guy.
Here is a link to Calico’s website , which (not surprisingly) fails to mention anything about the incident. According to the site,
“Prior to being drafted, he impressed many NFL coaches with his 4.34-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine in February 2003. A native of the Memphis suburb of Millington, Tenn., Calico was drafted in the second round (60th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft.”
There’s one question I’ve always about the NFL combine. What’s the big deal with the 40-yard dash? I wonder what role the 40 times of Calico and Chris Johnson played into their placement in the draft. I know Johnson put up a mind-boggling 4.24, but in the whole scheme of things, who really cares?
Do you think Johnson would have been a first-round pick if he would have ran a 4.35? Surely one good sprint didn’t catapult him into the first round. If so, its seems like an absurd way to judge talent.
